Backscattering Effects In Silicon Ring Resonators

Backscattering can dramatically modify the response of ring resonators and be the limiting parameter of the Q-factor. We present evidence of backscattering, a model, and a fitting procedure that provides a complete characterization of the resonance. Keywords—resonators; backscattering;

Harmonic generation in silicon nitride ring resonators.

We demonstrate second- and third-harmonic generation in a centrosymmetric CMOS-compatible material using ring resonators and integrated optical waveguides. The χ(2) response is induced by using the nanoscale structure of the waveguide to break the bulk symmetry of silicon nitride (Si3N4) with the silicon dioxide (SiO2) cladding. Using a high-Q ring resonator cavity to enhance the efficiency of ...

Low-loss photonic wires and compact ring resonators in silicon-on-insulator

We demonstrate low-loss, single-mode photonic wires in silicon-on-insulator as an enabling technology for future dense photonic integrated circuits. These waveguides are defined with 248nm deep UV lithography and have losses as low as 2.4dB/cm for a width of 500nm at 1550nm wavelength. Bends and directional couplers are fabricated and used to build ring resonators with 5μm radius, Q-factors hig...

High confinement suspended micro-ring resonators in silicon-on-insulator.

We demonstrate suspended micrometer-scale ring resonators with quality factors exceeding 15,000. The high quality factor is achieved by using a suspension method where the disturbance of the optical mode due to the support arms is minimized. We show an insertion loss of less than .02dB per suspension bridge.

Carrier-induced optical bistability in silicon ring resonators.

We demonstrate optical bistability in a micrometer-sized silicon ring resonator based on the free-carrier dispersion effect in silicon. We measure the transfer function of the resonator showing a hysteresis loop with an input optical power of less than 10 mW. The influence of the thermal optical effect, which is minimized in the experiment by use of nanosecond pulses, is evaluated theoretically...
